Exploring the Mystic River

One of the natural landmarks that give Mystic, Connecticut its shape is the Mystic River. This river, however, is more than just a great part of the natural scenery. Where is the Mystic River

The Mystic River is a tributary of Whitford Brook and runs for about 3.4 miles. It splits the village of Mystic and separates Groton and Stonington en route to Fishers Island Sound. The river is fairly narrow in the northern part near Whitford Brook but widens as it approaches the ocean.

Fishing on the Mystic River

The Mystic River is a great place to drop in a line and go fishing. There are plenty of accessible spots to try your hand at fishing. Mason's Island

Mason's Island sits at the mount of the Mystic River and offers a host of great activities. The Mystic Point and Masons Island marinas sit along the northern shore and provide great access to the Mystic Harbor. Kitchen Little is an American restaurant set on the western edge of the island that offers breakfast and seafood. Off the southeastern side of the island sits Enders Island. This little island is home to St. Edmund's Retreat. The retreat is home to some gorgeous gardens and breathtaking views of the ocean. Walking around the garden or on walking trails is free to visitors.

Sixpenny Island is home to Six Penny Island Wildlife Area. The land is a big marsh and not accessible by vehicle. A railroad runs along the edge of the island but the best way to access the island is via kayak or canoe. The island doesn't have a lot of traffic so this is a great place to sneak away from it all and enjoy a meal.
